A lower vehicle requires a smarter structure. More flexible movement requires a better drive system. More stable operation requires every component to work together.
As automated factories continue to upgrade, an AGV manufacturer planned to develop a new low-profile AGV for material transport beside production lines. The AGV needed to move in all directions while keeping the total vehicle height below 220 mm, allowing it to travel under equipment and through narrow spaces.

The Challenge Of A Low-Profile AGV

The challenge was not simply to make the AGV move. The real challenge was to achieve the required speed, load capacity, movement flexibility, stability, and reliability within very limited installation space.
A standard steering drive wheel could meet the movement requirements, but its steering motor and gearbox often take up too much vertical space. Even when the speed and load capacity are suitable, the total height of the drive unit may still exceed the available space inside a low-profile chassis.
This project therefore required more than standard product selection. The walking system, steering structure, transmission direction, and installation space all had to be considered together.

HKT ROBOT’s Low-Profile Steering Drive Wheel Solution

Based on the customer’s AGV structure and operating requirements, HKT ROBOT developed a low-profile horizontal steering drive solution.
The walking system used a 150 mm wheel, a 21:1 gear ratio, a maximum speed of 1 m/s, and a load capacity of 600 kg. This configuration fully met the customer’s speed and load requirements while supporting flexible movement in different directions.
However, the key to making the whole solution possible was the steering structure.
To reduce the installation height, we used a right-angle planetary gearbox in the steering system. By changing the transmission direction, the motor and gearbox occupied less vertical space. As a result, the total height of the steering drive unit was reduced to only 180 mm with 31.5 mm motor ground clearance.
This not only met the customer’s requirement for a vehicle height below 220 mm, but also left more space for the chassis, electrical components, and other internal parts.
From the 150 mm wheel to the 21:1 gear ratio, from the 1 m/s speed to the 600 kg load capacity, from the right-angle transmission structure to the final height of 180 mm, every detail was selected around our customer’s complete AGV design.

The First Delivery Led To The Next Project

After delivery, the customer quickly installed the steering drive units on the new AGV and started on-site testing.
The test results met the customer’s expectations. More importantly, after testing the product, the customer contacted our sales team late at night and immediately started discussing another AGV project.
This time, the customer wanted to achieve an even lower installation height and asked HKT ROBOT to evaluate the feasibility of a differential drive unit with a total height of only 118 mm.
From a 180 mm low-profile steering drive unit to a 118 mm ultra-low differential drive unit, from solving the current installation problem to discussing the next AGV structure, from the first delivery to the next development project, the cooperation continued naturally.

One Cooperation Becomes The Beginning Of Another

When a customer starts discussing a new project immediately after testing the first product, it shows more than satisfaction with a single specification.
It shows trust in the actual performance of the product. It shows recognition of our understanding of AGV structures. It shows confidence in our technical communication, engineering support, and ability to handle custom requirements.
For HKT ROBOT, reliability is not simply a statement in a brochure. It is stable performance after the product is installed. Professional service is not simply recommending a standard model. It is finding the right balance between speed, load, movement, and installation space. Cooperation is not simply completing one order. It is solving one challenge and then supporting the customer’s next project.
One project solves a real problem. One successful delivery builds technical trust. One trusted solution opens the door to the next cooperation.
This is the value HKT ROBOT aims to provide to every AGV and AMR manufacturer.
We do not merely supply components. We grow alongside our partners, deliver real solutions for real challenges, and stand with them for every next project.
